Marital dissolution is ubiquitous in western societies. It poses major scientific and sociological problems both in theoretical and therapeutic terms. Scholars and therapists agree on the existence of a sort of second law of thermodynamics for sentimental relationships. Effort is required to sustain them. Love is not enough. Building on a simple version of the second law we use optimal control theory as a novel approach to model sentimental dynamics.

Our analysis is consistent with sociological data. We show that, when both partners have similar emotional attributes, there is an optimal effort policy yielding a durable happy union. This policy is prey to structural destabilization resulting from a combination of two factors: there is an effort gap because the optimal policy always entails discomfort and there is a tendency to lower effort to non-sustaining levels due to the instability of the dynamics.

The rise of the Internet has allowed individuals in the dating market to socially acceptable mating outcomes for the younger generation (5).

Now imagine you had a few million friends who could guide you through the thicket with their epic tales of success and failure. They sort and sift, crunch and correlate, catching whatever nuggets of mating wisdom fall out. Then they post a report of their findings — and the resultant dating tips — often with pop culture references, statistical graphs and pictures of half-naked young men and women. We invited experts with serious credentials in the science of mating and dating to weigh in on a few select OkTrend conclusions.

The same goes for stated salaries, and the money discrepancy only increases with age. Our scientists say: For men, this makes sense. Rich is hot too. Men deceive about their status and income in order to make themselves seem more desirable to women. But why are women lying?

How a Math Genius Hacked OkCupid to Find True Love

Chris McKinlay was folded into a cramped fifth-floor cubicle in UCLA’s math sciences building, lit by a single bulb and the glow from his monitor. Follow AustReview. Paul J. What do submarine attacks, ant-trails, and dating have in common? Not much, except that they are all instances of pursuit and evasion problems and all submit to elegant mathematical treatments. The mathematics involved in such problems is varied and interesting in its own right, but the applications breathe life into the mathematics and invite wider engagement—as the intense interest of the military in such problems, especially during wartime, demonstrates.

Consider the problem of a submarine commander about to fire on an enemy warship.

Love formula revealed by UCL lecturer Dr Hannah Fry at Oxford Literary Festival

If you think you are the only one feeling gloomy about not having found your soul mate yet, think again. Peter Backus, a U. K lecturer and researcher, was so desperate that one day he actually sat down and calculated that he had only a 1 in , chance of finding love. Equally mesmerised by the hard facts of love, John Gottman and James Murray, two US researchers, applied mathematics to the dynamics of relationships and actually derived a mathematical formula which forecasted how conflicts between married couples devolved or got resolved.

Of course, you would be forgiven for believing that the beautiful mysteries of Love cannot possibly be quantified by the regimental laws of mathematics.
